So my NaNoWriMo novel has something to with romance in the workplace. It's set in a publishing firm that publishes male-oriented magazines (think FHM and Stuff). I'm two chapters in and already there are references to Dungeons and Dragons, Star Wars, and Mike Tyson's Punch Out! on the NES (Yeah, so I'm nerdy. What.). Also, there's quite a bit of foreplay and, well, actual sex. It's a lot harder to write sex scenes that I thought (thankfully, there's a lot of research material on the subject on the Internet), and I'm left wondering if certain actions sound too cliched (I leave it to your imagination to figure out what those actions are). Nevertheless, it's really quite fun, even if I am terribly behind on my word count (I'm hoping to power through 2000 words tonight, but who knows).
Anyway, my tentative titles for the novel are: 1) Hot Off the Presses, or 2) NSFW: Not Safe For Work. I'm leaning toward the latter, since it has that slight geeky connotation.
Yeah, I'm totally rockin' the cliches with this thing.
First day quota done! Although it did bleed over to the second day, but oh well, I had a lot of crap to do at work yesterday. I don't know how often I'm going to update you guys on the word count though -- it might get horrendously boring after awhile.
Anyway, time to sleep. I'll write a longer blog entry about it some time.
So that's 49,300 more words to go. I'm going to work on 1,000 more words before I head to sleep tonight, but that's a pretty good start considering I had a lot of work today.
You can keep up on my word count on my primary blog at neekole.com on the sidebar.
Notes scribbled hastily in my Moleskine journal in preparation for NaNoWriMo:
- Set in a dotcom/magazine/newsroom
- Sex scenes - must-have
- Intrigue; Scandal
- Token geek character/Tech editor?
- Sex editor/columnist - living a lie - opposite of who she is - insert joke about sex and the city carrie bradshaw
- Some mention of blogging and web 2.0 in a snide sarcastic way ("well documented crowd")
- forbidden romance - possibly a CEO sleeping with an inside informant or something
Yep, going to be chockful of cliches. Oh boy.
Oh heaven help me.
