I hadn’t planned on doing this, but I’ve decided to quit drinking soda. I’ve quit drinking the “regular” type (the ones laden with high fructose corn syrup) years ago, and switched to the diet version to reduce my dependency on the sweet bubbly drinks. And, hey, I’ve rarely touched the regular stuff since. But the problem with the diet soda is that I drink a LOT of it. Like 2-3 cans a day. Yes, it’s zero calories, so it should be okay, right? Well, it’s not as easy as all that. There are quite a few health problems associated with it — lower bone density, questions about the safety of aspartame, and ironically, there have been studies linking obesity to diet soda (drinking all that zero calorie stuff can actually make you feel hungrier, since your body is suddenly craving calories). Yeah I know, it’s okay if you drink the stuff in moderation. But the thing is, I wasn’t. I was OVER-drinking it. In fact, I was addicted to it. A day did not go by without a diet coke in my hand. And I knew it was getting bad when I started to get these pangs for it, even though my stomach was hurting.
So last week, I went cold turkey. I didn’t buy a single soda can from the vending machine at work. I drank some sparkling water to give me that fizz just to hold me over. I drank tea, coffee, milk, and juice. Believe it or not, it was pretty difficult. It’s become such a habit to get that diet soda for lunch. I had to really stop that impulse and control myself. But in the end, I managed to survive the last six days without touching a single can. Phew.
Now to face yet another week. Wish me luck…
